The Atkins Diet became mainstream when Dr. Robert Atkins promoted a method he came across in a study by Alfred W. Pennington. After publishing his own books on the topic, the Atkins Diet became well-known nationwide and one of the most popular carb diets available.
The idea is that by limiting carbohydrates, the body will use stored fat as an energy source as opposed to glucose produced by consuming starches and other foods that are rich in carbohydrates. One theory surrounding the diet is that burning fat burns calories. By putting out more calories that you take in when restricting carbs, the body will respond in weight loss and increased energy levels. There is also a form of this diet geared towards diabetics called, “Atkins Blood Sugar Control Program” (ABSCP), which helps aid type 2 diabetics in coming off of their insulin medications.
