The Explanation of Firmament

Firmament is referred to periodically in the Bible and refers to the heavens or the sky. It is often believed to be a tangible, sphere where the ground ends and the sky begins. In early editions, heaven was actually considered to be below ground, below the water level, and in the story of Noah, the waters sprang up or “erupted from” the ground rather than pouring down as rain, as we often imagine.

The Bible also claims that it is the firmament which separates the stars, the sun, and moon from the Earth, and is an actual dome which sits above the ground, keeping these things afloat, like a huge bowl. However, this is a scientific impossibility, and the idea of firmament is often considered to be a myth, only being referenced in this manner in the Bible. There is no proof that it actually exists, yet the Bible claims that this is what separates our solar system from the Earth.
