The Pharaoh of Egypt was holding people hostage, God was forcing him to let God’s people go. Pharaoh ordered every firstborn son and animal to be sacrificed. God protected his people when the Angel of the Lord came to take the sacrifices, any home that had the blood of a lamb marking the door posts and lintel was to be “passed over”. This is was the first Passover.
Passover since then has become a ritual and is the longest national holiday observed by the Jews. It is a very important reminder for Israel to remember that they are the chosen people of God and were saved from this longest night in history. The symbolism of the lamb’s blood is why Jesus was then called the Lamb of God.
