With 20% of its population living in poverty and a median income just below $43,000, Louisiana comes in at number 8 on the top 10 list. While the good news is that the number of people in poverty is not lower than it was almost a decade ago, it’s not better either.
Two of Louisiana’s greatest cities came in higher than the state’s average with 28.7% of the New Orleans population living in poverty and Baton Rouge following behind at 26.7%. Although Louisiana has seen a slow growth in median income, New Orleans and Baton Rouge continue to fall behind.
