Top 10 States with the Most Poverty

Oklahoma

With over 630,000 people, or 17.2% of the state’s population impoverished, Oklahoma ranks number 10 on the top 10 list for states with the highest poverty rate. With a median household income approximately $7,000 less than the national median income this should come as no surprise.

While employment has increased in the last six years families continue to rely on food assistance programs like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). Despite the increase in employment, it is still believed that at least 45% of single mothers in Oklahoma live in poverty. This is a frightening statistic for anyone who faces raising children alone.
