Come Together
Chuck Berry has been involved in a few lawsuits, but this one was against one of the most well known rock bands in the world, the Beatles. The Beatles song “Come Together” was apparently a rip from Berry’s original track, “You Can’t Catch Me” released in 1956, several years prior to the Beatles track in 1973.
Chuck Berry’s publisher, Morris Levy, sued John Lennon in 1973. Some of the songs were similar and it was determined that Lennon and McCartney purposely slowed the song down in order to sound more original. The two settled out of court, but in addition to cash settlement, Lennon also agreed to record three other songs for Levy, but when he did not release the third song, Levy sued again for breach of contract. Lennon later countersued when Levy released an album of Lennon material in his possession.
