When Alfred Hitchcock released his thriller “Psycho” in 1960, the director made sure that audiences would stay riveted to the screen during the entire film by asking theater owners to refuse those trying to get into the theater late. People were mystified about the film, especially when audible gasps and screams could be heard from inside the theater. What was so shocking about this film? Norman Bates.
Norman Bates is a villain that is introduced as a meek, mild-mannered man who manages a roadside motel. As the film goes on and more information is revealed about Norman’s past, it starts to become clear that he is depraved and dangerous. The transformation of Norman from the moment he’s introduced until the last scene of the film is both unsettling and frightening.
