An elderly man in a wheelchair doesn’t seem to pose an immediate threat to anyone, but Mr. Potter is no ordinary man. He’s extremely wealthy and powerful in the small town of Bedford Falls, and wants to destroy George Bailey, the film’s main character, simply because their businesses are in competition. The character is so hateful that it caused the FBI to wonder if the entire film was propaganda for the communist party.
This villain steals money from a bumbling relative of George’s, which causes George to contemplate suicide. While everything turns out well at the end of the film, many viewers have the unsettling realization that nothing has happened to Potter. He hasn’t paid for his villainy, and is still free to continue to threaten George and the town.
