10 Things You Need to Know Before Getting a Credit Card

Card Fees

If you have bad credit or are in the process of establishing credit, your card might not be free. High-risk card providers often charge monthly and annual usage fees, and you may also have to send the company a deposit if you do not qualify for an unsecured card. These cards often offer a very low credit limit, but are useful for rebuilding your credit.

Your account activity, payments, and card limits are all reported to the credit agencies. If you maintain an account responsibly for at least a year, you may be able to apply for a credit card with fewer fees. Once your credit score dips below 500 you can plan on paying high interest, high fees, and maybe even using a secured credit card for a while.
