It has a complicated and rich history of mafia involvement. It was considered a haven for crime families and bosses from the late 1950s to the late 1990s. The city however remains one of the most dangerous despite the reduced presence of organized crime.
Black Hand, a racket group run by Italian gangsters started its operation where they sent threats to well-to-do individuals such as local merchants. The notes were written with menacing symbols, daggers and black hands. This continued happening for a long time until the gang members were convicted by RICO trial in 1991.
