10 Most Challenging Hiking Trails in the United States

Cactus to Clouds Trail

This challenging hiking trail is located in California and starts on the desert floor, vertically a half mile more than Mt. Whitney. It is recommended that you start this hike before dawn as well, because temperatures are known to reach triple digits for more than 100 days of the year and there is no water below 8,500 feet.

The Palm Springs, California trail has a total distance of 23 miles, and features an elevation change of 13,400 feet. During the trail, hikers will encounter varying temperatures, possible rain, and even hail when you reach the higher parts. Pair this alongside the broiling hot temperatures and extreme sun which the area is known for, and you are asking for a great workout and challenge, during the duration of your hike.
