10 Things You Need to Know Before Getting a Loan

Documentation

Before any institution will give you a loan you will have to provide certain information and documentation. You should go in with your photo ID, a copy of your tax return, pay stubs, and bank statements at the very least. Some lenders prefer that you have two forms of identification, so consider also bringing a passport, Social Security card, or birth certificate to your application appointment.

You may also find it helpful to bring reference letters and a copy of your credit report. The lender can access your report, but bringing your own copy shows that you are proactive and care about your financial situation. If you are self employed, bring in payment receipts or 1099 forms. To avoid multiple trips to the institution, call the lender in advance and ask what you should bring to the appointment or check the institution’s website to see if a list is available.
