Newburgh

With a population of only 22,183, Newburgh has a crime rate of about 60 per 1,000 residents. Out of this number, 18.64 and 41.70 per 1,000 residents are violent crimes and property crimes respectively. Newburgh is reported to have a crime epidemic reminiscent of the Bronx of the 1970s.

The tiny city is a scene of some of the most ambitious gang raids ever conducted by the FBI’s SWAT team. In fact, according to Preet Bharara, the US Atorney for the Southern District of New York, violent street gangs have, for too long, held residents of Newburgh hostage prompting the FBI to conduct synchronized raids to restore the rule of law.
