Jonah is a prophet of God, but he doesn’t want to go to Nineveh to preach repentance. When Jonah disobeyed God and got on a ship bound in the opposite direction to Tarshish he was running away from his Lord. God didn’t like that Jonah would disobey and try to hide from him so he sent a violent storm.
The ship crew determined that Jonah was the reason they were being pummeled by the storm so they tossed him overboard. Jonah was swallowed by a whale, which saved him from drowning. He spent three days in the whale praying and repenting before God commanded the whale to vomit him onto the shore. Jonah headed straight to Nineveh to do as God had asked.
