Virginia’s oldest house, Bacon’s Castle, dates back to 1665. Not always referred to as it is currently, it was also known as Allen’s Brick House for a time. This home is located on the banks of the James River. Many people have experienced paranormal events while visiting or passing by. Some claim to have seen the ghosts of previously indentured servants and slaves haunting the grounds, dragging chains with them or wearing tattered outfits. Virginia rebel leader Nathaniel Bacon’s rebels are also said to haunt the grounds–this makes sense, as the castle was commandeered by him for a brief period at the end of 1676.
Today, Bacon’s Castle offers tours to people who wish to step back in time and experience a slice of American history for themselves. The nearby Smith’s Plantation is worked into the tour, making it an interesting afternoon excursion. If you’re lucky, while you wander the grounds, you might even catch a glimpse of the original patrons yourself.
