Held in the Moroccan Sahara, the heat alone would scare most people off. This marathon is a six-day and 155-mile challenge and is known as “the toughest footrace on earth.” It is set up similar to Tour de France where each day introduces a new stage with individual winners for the day. Approximately 1,000 runners compete in Marathon de Sables annually.
This marathon is also considerably challenging because competitors must carry their own supplies – less the daily ration of water. With temperatures flaring up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit and the threat of sandstorms, it is a race which only the toughest athletes can complete, and the best trained individuals should take on.
