Charles Manson
While the Charles Manson case focused more on California and, specifically, Hollywood, it still terrified Americans all across the country. The Manson Family was responsible for a group of gruesome murders committed against well-known celebrities, including actress Sharon Tate. Considered a narcissist and psychopath, Manson convinced multiple young women to murder on his behalf.
Manson himself was a bit of an enigma and difficult to pin down. Although he had a long rap sheet develop over time, most of his charges were related to thefts and petty issues. The investigation was confused by Manson’s desired attempts to begin a race war–bodies were often mutilated with the words, “war” or “Helter Skelter.” Although this slowed the process down, both Charlie and his “family” were eventually arrested in 1969.
