1960 Daytona

This 37 driver crash is known as NASCAR’s largest single wreck ever to occur. During the 1960 Daytona Modified Sportsman Race, 37 out of the 68 cars participating were involved in one accident. This resulted in damaged cars – 13 of which were wiped out, and five drivers hospitalized. No one was seriously injured in this accident.

However, this incident, along with a pileup that involved serious injuries of five drivers and the career-ending injuries of Johnny Beauchamp and Lee Petty, led to changes in NASCAR. One of the most significant changes being that the number of drivers allowed on the track at once was reduced from 68 to 43.
