When considering violent crimes, it’s important to include that thousands of shootings occur in the United States annually, leaving the unfortunate victims wounded or dead. Violent crime in relation to shootings is a problem not only in the U.S., but according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), 74% of homicides in 2010 in the Americas were committed using firearms and 21% in Europe. With those statistics, it is no surprise that shootings and overall violence are notably present in all cities and towns, with some ranking shockingly higher higher than others.
To add to these statistics, it was reported by Neighborhood Scout in 2014, that 11 out of 100 of the nation’s most dangerous cities are located in the state of Florida. This data includes violent crimes such as murder, rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault reported to the FBI and isn’t entirely based on just shootings. This is a clear indication of where Florida stands overall, in comparison to other states in the nation.
What is surprising is that many of the cities with the most violent crimes are not cities you typically imagine when you think of “unsafe” or “dangerous”. These cities, including Florida’s top 10, are widely known as tourist attractions, with beautiful beaches, and sparkling water. Although many large cities make the list, there are also small cities and towns that also have high rates of violent crime. Neighborhood Scout has provided statistics and data to help us determine which areas in Florida have the most prominent levels of violent crime.
